The dolls also have story books and accessories. These dolls, represent 9 to 10 years, and they "live" through important American history events. In 1998 Mattel purchased the company and began shifting the dolls from historical dolls to more modern dolls. Although, they do occasionally add a "historical" American Girl Doll to the line. For instance, Kit Kittredge was added in 2000. In addition, Kaya (a native American Girl Doll) was added in 2002. Then in 2007 Julie was introduced along with Julie's best friend, Ivy.

The American Girl Dolls Collection have numerous dolls available along with their "Dolls of the Year" line plus the Bitty Baby and Bitty Baby Twins.
